In American odds, +150 means a $100 bet wins $150 in profit. Get your stake back too and you collect $250 total.

Here's how the plus and minus signs work:
  • Plus (+) odds = the underdog. The number is how much profit you make on a $100 bet.
  • Minus (-) odds = the favorite. The number is how much you have to bet to win $100 profit.
Worked examples:

BetOddsProfit if it winsTotal returned
$100+150$150$250
$20+150$30$50
$150-150$100$250
$110-110$100$210
Turning odds into a probability. Odds also tell you how likely the book thinks something is (before its margin):

  • Plus odds: 100 ÷ (odds + 100). For +150: 100 ÷ 250 = 40%
  • Minus odds: odds ÷ (odds + 100). For -150: 150 ÷ 250 = 60%
So betting +150 only makes sense over time if you think the real chance is better than 40%.

Decimal odds, which some apps let you switch to, include your stake. +150 is 2.50 in decimal: $100 × 2.50 = $250 back.

Once this clicks, the odds board gets a lot easier to read. What confused you most when you started reading American odds? And do you keep your app on American or decimal?
