If your max bet suddenly drops to a few dollars, your account has probably been limited (also called "restricted"). US sportsbooks can set betting limits per customer, and they don't usually have to tell you exactly why.

Common reasons books limit accounts:
  • Consistently beating the closing line. If your bets regularly get better odds than where the line ends up, books read you as a sharp bettor.
  • Betting soft or niche markets. Obscure props or low-profile leagues with lots of winning action.
  • Promo-only play. Taking bonuses and barely betting otherwise.
  • Moving on bad lines fast. Hitting stale odds right after news breaks.
  • Patterns that look like coordinated betting.
How common is it? Data is limited, but in 2025 the Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported that across its seven online sportsbooks, an average of 0.64% of bettors had been limited. More than half of those (57.6%) were cut to 1–24% of the default maximum bet. In September 2025 the commission also agreed that books there must notify customers whose bets are being limited, and that it would draft a rule requiring it.

What you can do: - Contact support and ask whether the limit is permanent - Keep accounts at several legal books - Rules differ by state, so check your state regulator's site if you think something isn't right

Separately, books can void individual bets for "obvious errors" in their odds, which is different from a limit.

Have you been limited? How fast did it happen, and did the book tell you anything?
